What kind of expenses are there

The holiday season had just ended and the next one seemed forever away. How did I know how much money I was going to need in September when January had barely started?

For years I had been living paycheck to paycheck just hoping my money would last until the next check came in. When bills came due I never really knew if I had the money to pay them. I had a very general idea of what my expenses were but inevitably I would spend way more than I thought I would.

The idea of planning for my expenses, at least beyond my rent payment, was far outside my comfort zone. What finally helped me overcome my budgeting struggle was when I gained an understanding of the three types of expenses: fixed, periodic and variable. If you are small business taxpayer, you can adopt or change your accounting method to account for inventories i in the same manner as materials and supplies that are non-incidental, or ii conform to your treatment of inventories in an applicable financial statement as defined in section b 3 , or if the taxpayer does not have an applicable financial statement, the method of accounting used in the taxpayers books and records prepared in accordance with the taxpayer's accounting procedures.

See section c 1. You must capitalize, rather than deduct, some costs. These costs are a part of your investment in your business and are called capital expenses. Capital expenses are considered assets in your business. In general, there are three types of costs you capitalize. Note: You can elect to deduct or amortize certain business start-up costs.

Refer to chapters 7 and 8 of Publication , Business Expenses. Generally, you cannot deduct personal, living, or family expenses. Credit card payments see budget tip below.

Budget tip: If you pay off your credit cards in full each month, classify the expenses according to what you buy — groceries under needs, for example. However, if you maintain a balance and are accruing interest and fees, list payments beyond the minimum under debt repayment. Every few months, revisit your budget and adjust as necessary.
